What we believe
We believe that everyone has the right to be safe, to be treated equally and to have access to the same opportunities as everyone else. We know that violence of any kind denies people these rights and attacks their dignity and self-respect.
Our approach is based on the understanding that:
Although men also experience violence in family or intimate relationships, it is overwhelmingly women and children who are victims of relationship violence and most often at the hands of a male partner or family member.
Violence and abuse is deliberate and a choice on the part of the abuser. It is not about 'losing control'.
Victims of abuse and violence always resist. That is, they do many things to oppose the abuse and to keep their dignity and their self-respect. For instance, a woman may try to leave the house even though her partner has forbidden her to go. Knowing this some men will try to stop this resistance by taking her car keys and purse.
Because violence and abuse can be very dangerous, victims resist in ways that may not be obvious and their acts of resistance often go unnoticed. When we focus on women and children's responses to abuse we honour their resistance, knowledge and strengths.
We use our resources and knowledge together with women and children's knowledge and strengths so that women and children may feel and be safe, have control over their life and feel valued and respected.
